How to download YouTube videos in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Copy the YouTube URL

Open the video on YouTube and copy the link from the address bar or the Share button.

  2. 2

    Paste it into SnapFrom

Paste the link into the box above. We automatically detect the video and fetch the available qualities.

  3. 3

    Pick quality and download

Choose between MP4 video (up to 4K) or MP3 audio. The file saves directly to your device.

Supported YouTube formats and quality

SnapFrom extracts every format YouTube serves for a given video, so you can pick the right tradeoff between file size and quality. For most videos, that means MP4 combined video + audio for playback anywhere, plus separate audio-only tracks if you just want the soundtrack.

Video formats

MP4 (H.264/AVC) is the universal choice — every phone, browser, TV, and editor plays it. WebM (VP9 or AV1) often ships at the same resolution with 30–50% smaller file sizes, which helps when you are downloading over a slow connection or trying to conserve storage on a phone.

Here is how the common resolutions compare for a typical 10-minute YouTube video:

ResolutionCodecTypical sizeBest for
2160p (4K UHD)AV1 / VP9400–800 MBTVs, 4K monitors, archiving
1440p (2K QHD)VP9 / H.264250–500 MBDesktop viewing
1080p (Full HD)H.264 / VP9100–250 MBUniversal — best default
720p (HD)H.26450–120 MBPhones, tablets
360p–480p (SD)H.26415–40 MBSmall storage, lectures

Audio formats

If you only need the soundtrack — music, a podcast episode, a lecture — grab an audio-only track instead of the full video. M4A (AAC at 128–256kbps) is what YouTube serves natively; MP3 is widely compatible at up to 320kbps. For podcasts and spoken-word content, 128kbps is plenty; for music, 256kbps AAC or 320kbps MP3 is the sweet spot. See our dedicated YouTube to MP3 converter page for a deeper dive on audio quality.

Frame rate and HDR

When a video is published at 60fps, SnapFrom preserves it — handy for gameplay, sports, and action clips. HDR (high dynamic range) passthrough works on a best-effort basis; playback requires a compatible display to see the full benefit. If you just want a compatible file to watch anywhere, pick the standard MP4 variant.

Why people use SnapFrom as their YouTube downloader

Dozens of free YouTube downloaders exist. SnapFrom focuses on the basics — speed, clean files, and no surprises — instead of piling on upsells.

Free for personal use, no limits

There is no daily download cap, no premium tier hiding 4K behind a paywall, and no account signup. Paste a link and go.

Clean files — no watermarks or re-encoding

SnapFrom hands you the original file YouTube serves. No overlay watermarks, no transcoding that softens the image, no baked-in ads. If you plan to edit or re-upload under a different license, a clean source saves a lot of rework.

Runs in any modern browser

Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge, Brave, Arc — they all work the same. There is nothing to install and no browser extension to review. On iOS and Android you get the identical UI in Safari or Chrome without leaving the browser.

Private and fast

Downloads happen through our servers, so your device never talks to YouTube directly for the file. We do not store the media after your download completes, and the only analytics we keep are anonymous, aggregate counts — see our privacy policy.

YouTube Shorts, playlists, and channels

SnapFrom works with every URL format YouTube uses, not just the classic /watch?v= long-form video page.

Shorts

Paste any /shorts/ URL and you get a vertical MP4 you can save to Camera Roll, re-share, or remix. Short-form videos top out at 1080×1920 on YouTube today. See our dedicated YouTube Shorts downloader page for a Shorts-focused walkthrough.

Playlists

Paste a playlist URL on the SnapFrom home page and we stream the list of videos as they resolve — large playlists (100+ videos) load progressively so you can start downloading the first few while the rest is still fetching.

Channels

To archive a whole channel, open it on YouTube, go to the Videos tab, and use the channel’s Uploads playlist. Paste that playlist URL on our home page and browse from there.

MP4-only or MP3-only flows

If you already know you only want the video file, go to YouTube to MP4. For audio-only, use the YouTube to MP3 converter.

Download YouTube videos on iPhone and Android

SnapFrom is a web app. There is nothing to install on either iOS or Android — open the site in your mobile browser and paste a link.

iPhone and iPad (Safari)

  1. Open this page in Safari.
  2. Copy a YouTube URL (share sheet → Copy Link works from the YouTube app).
  3. Paste it above and tap the Download button for your format.
  4. Safari drops the file into the Files app → On My iPhone → Downloads.
  5. From the Files app, share the video to Photos if you want it in Camera Roll.

Android (Chrome, Firefox, Samsung Internet)

  1. Open SnapFrom in your browser.
  2. Paste the YouTube link.
  3. Tap Download — files land in your system Downloads folder.
  4. Open them with the Files, Gallery, or a video player app.

On low-storage phones, pick 720p instead of 1080p — the quality difference is imperceptible at phone-screen distance and you save 50–70% on file size.

Is SnapFrom safe and legal to use?

We designed SnapFrom around three principles that also happen to match what Google and Apple look for when they review tools like this: respect for the source platform, respect for creators, and respect for your privacy.

Safety

There are no pop-ups, no redirects, and no bundled installers on SnapFrom. The site is plain HTML + a PasteBox. Files you download come straight from YouTube — not repackaged by us — so the only thing that hits your device is the original media.

Copyright and fair use

Downloading public videos for personal, offline viewing is generally considered fair use in most jurisdictions. What you may not do is re-upload copyrighted material, use it in monetized content without permission, or redistribute it commercially. If you are a rights-holder and believe a URL has been misused with our tool, our DMCA page explains how to reach us.

Privacy

We do not keep the videos you download, we do not sell any data, and we only run anonymous analytics to understand how the site is used. Full details: privacy policy and terms of service.
